5 Tips to Get You Ready for the Recording Studio

Posted By Giana

So you're ready to start recording?  For musicians who haven't yet had to record in a studio, this could be a little nerve-wracking. In this short post, we'll give you five quick but important tips to make this experience a little less scary and to leave you feeling a little more ready.

1.  Check Out The Space

Meeting in advance and having the opportunity to tour the space will jump start your mind with ideas ahead of time. Knowing what to expect from the studio you will be recording at will also give you a little peace of mind and can open up a friendly line of communication between you and the studio staff that can help you solve problems before they happen. Still feeling uncomfortable? Listen to your gut. If the space isn't for you, that's okay. This recording experience is all about you and where you feel most comfortable being creative. If something is off or you feel rushed or pressured, keep lookin', you'll thank yourself later.

2. Get There Early

One of the most important things you can do for yourself and the studio you are recording at is to respect everyone's time, including your own. Arriving a little early will give you the extra few minutes you need to make sure you are in the best headspace possible. It also gives you a little extra time in case something unexpected comes up.

3. Practice & Warm Up in Advance

Do absolutely everything you need to do to perform your best. Remember, everyone gets the jitters. Practice, practice, practice. Warm up and know your plan before you get there. This goes hand in hand with respecting the studio's time. You'll have a few extra seconds to shake off the nerves when you are prepared.

4. Be Someone Other People Want to Work With

Be respectful to everyone you are working with. Be kind and do your best to be pleasant, despite those nerves. No one want sto work with a grump. If there is something wrong, communicate with your team and the studio's engineer. Be patient and trust that any problems that arise will get resolved. Keep your cool.

5. Show Up Sober

Many musicians swear they can still function at their best when under the influence, but few actually do. This can also come off as disrespectful to the studio engineer (and anyone else) that is working with you. Save the drinks for after your recording session.

Everyone gets a little nervous sometimes! Prepare as best as you can. Hydrate, rest, relax and HAVE FUN!
