Hitting the open road on a motorcycle is not something most people have to do, but rather want to do. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, or just prefer a motorcycle for your A to B travels- you’ll have to insure your motorcycle. This quick guide will take you through the basics of what you need to know.
State Requirements
Here in Pennsylvania, it is required that all motorcycle operators carry liability coverage. The state requirements are $15,000 bodily injury, $30,000 each accident, and $5,000 property damage. Some states like Florida require you to carry a minimum of $10,000 in medical benefits, and some also require drivers to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
Coverage Options
You may recognize some of these insurance coverage options as they are very similar to the standard options you’ll find for auto coverage. Take a look below and talk to your agent if you have any questions.
1. Collision: This coverage pays for damage to your motorcycle (minus your deductible).
2. Comprehensive: This type of coverage is for theft or damage to your motorcycle by something other than a crash with another vehicle.
3. Personal Injury Protection: PIP covers medical bills for injuries that you, your passengers or pedestrians suffer from an accident regardless of who’s at fault.
4. Trip interruption coverage: This pays for lodging, transportation and food if your motorcycle is disabled after a crash far from home.
5. Custom Motorcycle Parts Coverage: This will cover all of those custom accessories that are part of your motorcycle, usually up to $30,000.
6. Lay-up coverage: This type of policy means that during the winter months when you have your motorcycle stored away, all coverage except comprehensive is suspended. (Saves you money)
