I usually don't do reviews unless I am really impressed but I am moved to do so after visiting Safari Beauty Salon because impressed is exactly what I was. The salon itself is very cozy and inviting. And the stylists are warm, friendly, and professional. I was greeted properly, everyone introduced themselves and I was offered something to drink. They gave clear instructions how to maintain the style and educated me on hair health which tells me that not only do they care about keeping their customers happy (which is a rarity these days) but that they are skilled stylists.I am very happy to have found them and will continue giving them my business.
DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU CARE ABOUT THE HEALTH OF YOUR HAIR! I'll keep this short and simple. Before the appointment: I booked online using the website's system. I also called to confirm my appointment and to describe my hair situation (natural, first time getting twists, I rarely go to the salon but it is in very good condition). During the appointment: When I arrived, there were two other customers being serviced. No one greeted me. After I introduced myself, I was told to wait and sat for 45 minutes before anyone talked to me. The stylist kept sending another person to relay messages to me instead of speaking with me directly. The stylist did not talk to me as she twisted my hair. It was extremely painful and she parted very small sections even though I asked for medium-sized twists. As I was going through the process of paying, the women FINALLY began talking to me. They were especially nice after they saw I had left a considerate tip. After the appointment: The very next day, one of my twists fell out. Less than a week after my hair was twisted, several of my twist were hanging by thin roots. I could not tell if I had lost hair and/or if the sections were too small. About 3 weeks after the service, I took out one of the twists that had been hanging by a thread. My hair went from 5 inches to 1 - I am not exaggerating. As I ran my fingers through my hair, it broke off and I was left with an uneven, scraggly stump. Now I need to take out my twists IMMEDIATELY and I will probably need to chop off the majority of my hair due to the drastic damage experienced within such a short period of time. I repeat: DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU CARE ABOUT THE HEALTH OF YOUR HAIR!
Went here for a take down, wash, deep condition and reinstall. I was happy they were able to take me on a few days notice after having to cancel with my normal stylist. I arrived for my appointment and the woman at the door (later discovered her name was Candy after I heard someone call her that) looked at me like she had no idea what I was there for and didn't introduce herself or welcome/greet me at all. Okay. So after a few minutes she calls me over to sit down and asks me what I'm having done. I tell her and she says it's going to be $180 ($30 more than what the website says). She says it's more because of the deep conditioner -- later after showing her the website on my phone which says the wash includes deep conditioner, Sandy comes over and says that price is for Mondays and Wednesdays only (which is not mentioned on the website). Before starting my braids, Candy asked me if I want my part in the middle or the side. I told her the side with a swoop bang. She says okay and asks me to show her which side and where I want the part by using the comb to part. I did and after some playing around I say I'm okay with the spot. Fast forward a few hours later when my hair is done, I have no swoop bang! No hair under my left out hair in my bang area at all. My bangs are pretty thin so feeling unhappy and self conscious about the final look, I say something to Sandy (she did the install after Candy finished the braids). Basically they tell me it's partially my own fault because even though Candy acknowledged that I said I wanted a swoop bang, I didn't part it that way. Honestly, I wasn't aware I was supposed to be doing my own part -- I thought I was just giving guidance on where on my head I wanted it. I don't know how to do the part for a swoop bang. I give credit to Sandy because she did try to fix it but Candy argued with me and kept talking over me when I was trying to explain the situation to Sandy to the point where I left in tears. Sandy offered to take it out and fix it for half the price (not really sure -- she said half, then $50, then free, then $50 again). I would consider giving them a second chance but I think I would be very uncomfortable given how Candy treated me during this visit. When I went to leave Sandy gave me the price of $150 as if it were a favor. They had changed the price on the website by the next morning but luckily I took a screen shot before they could. Anyway was hoping I'd found an affordable, comfortable place to get my installs. I guess not. What the website had been changed to the next morning. What the website had been changed to the next morning. What the website said when I went. What the website said when I went.
HORRIBLE! RIDICULOUSLY! UNACCEPTABLE! Who comes in and says to a client "I don't feel like cutting hair today"??(!)(!) They do at SAFARI SALON!! This experience was sooo bad - I am writing it immediately from the parking lot!! *QUICK BACKSTORY: Made an appt. for today @10am (day before Valentine's Day), drove 40 mins to get here, paid for parking, waited for owner to come in. Owner, Sandy, slowly walked in and eventually invited me to sit in her chair... *AND THEN (!): Sandy proceeded to explain to me she had dental work done yesterday and didn't sleep... Then she simply said... "SORRY, I JUST DONT FEEL COMFORTABLE CUTTING HAIR TODAY." *YELPERS, SERIOUSLY? YES! I can't make this stuff up. Who does that? What happened to professionalism? Why did you need me to waist my time, not make an appt elsewhere, come in, sit down in your chair to tell me that?! I have NEVER been so disgusted before. She claimed she doesn't know who her staff schedules each day but she was simply not up to doing a cut today (note: the cut is almost exact to the one she posted in pictures here on Yelp). *Hard to believe... Tell me about it!! Unfortunately, 100% truth... & all I got before I left was "So sorry." She didn't even offer to make it right, ie. cut price for an appointment on another day... Something. Anything. - Nope! Nothing! I wanted to like this place. I wanted to be a regular. BUT sadly NOTHNG GOOD to report & I can't give you 1 good reason to spend your money here. *** HONEST TIP(!) - If you value your time and your valuable dollars --- DON'T SPEND EITHER HERE! It's simply unprofessional and disrespectful to make clients guess whether they will or will not leave with their hair done. ***"AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!"***
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised at the coziness of the salon and how friendly everyone was. Natalie was very accommodating and Sandy did my hair exactly the way I wanted it to be done. The prices are reasonable and ultimately I was very happy with the service. I'm going back ASAP.
So after my last braiding disaster at a different salon, I waited a month and decided to try braids again. I was definitely scared because I am still a braid novice and have had some bad experiences. That being said, I got medium box braids here and it was one of the best braiding experiences I have had. Professional, personable, neat, attentive and she actually listened to my requests etc. etc. First time I have gotten my hair braided and had the stylist chat with me. I hate sitting for that long and not even a word is spoken. I am now 4.5 weeks out and my braids still look great. I have never ever kept braids for more than 4 weeks and I think I am gonna keep these for at least another week. It did take much longer than I usually would expect but only one person was braiding my hair so I won't complain much. It also cost much more than I would expect but shrug, my hair looks good and no traction alopecia for me (fingers crossed). I would definitely recommend.
First Yelp review! :D Ever since I decided to transition to natural, I've been looking for a new salon. I didn't think the Dominican salon I usually go to would take care of my hair since my new growth is very thick and kinky-curly. This salon had great reviews so I decided to visit. It's a very cute and chic salon and had a cozy feel to it. The waiting room is equipped with a television, couches and a fridge and table with food and refreshments for customers. Never been to a salon like that before! I had my hair blowdried and flatironed. I forgot the name of the person who washed my hair (Rashika, I think?) but she was nice and made conversation with me. Natalie blowdried and flat ironed my hair and because I don't really like heat, I jumped a lot, lol, (was having throwback memories to Dominican blowouts *chills*), but she was very patient and kind and I appreciate that! I came out looking like I had a relaxer; that's how great my flat ironed hair looked! Overall, I am satisfied with my first visit to this salon and will definitely return. I have already plans on getting my Senegalese twists here :)

This salon is a 5 star salon. I went to Sandy about two Summer's ago. She did a phenomenal job. Especially considering I had her install some ratchet beauty supply store hair. I've wanted to come back for a long time but honestly I'm cheap and I was doing my own hair. Well fast forward to a bad perm job and a transition to natural...I made my return! This time a new young lady named Yvonne did my weave. I paid $130 for a full head sew in. Let me just say I left there feeling like I robbed them. I paid $130 for $1200 weave!
Don't Trust Them! I went there with 3 beautiful bundles of 12 inch, brand new, virgin malaysian hair from Queen hair and a picture of the style that I wanted. I left wearing what felt like 1 and a half packs of thin standard beauty supply hair, a short chopped up disaster that looked nothing like the picture, a dry scalp because she did not oil my scalp before applying the net, left over hair that was not my own, $120.00 poorer, and in tears! I went to another salon to fix their mess! The stylist told me that there is NO WAY that they used 2 1/2 packs of hair in my head, that the left over hair couldn't possibly be new malaysian Queen hair (since she has worked with it before) because it was old and cut up and felt like beauty supply store hair. She took out the tracks and saw that the pieces were chopped up so badly that a professional could not have done it. So...don't go to this salon! Your quality hair will magically become beauty supply substandard quality hair.... I'm sure that someone is going to be wearing the hair that I actually bought. ..... also, the stylist will not be able to weave professionally, and you will end up paying full price anyway. NOT A PROFESIONAL SALON...DISHONEST.
My experience was amazing!! I got the keratin treatment earlier today by the stylist Natalie she was amazing... She was patient and treated me like family shes also very funny!! I will DEFINITELY go back there again! I recommend it to everyone looking for a new salon to go to. And its very clean and professional too!
I had a great experience at the salon. Their customer service is on point, the place is really clean and Sandy did a great job on my hair. I was going to give them a four stars review but the braids underneath my weave were too tights! And it's been a week already. However, I would still recommend the salon to my fellow yelpers
I went here on saturday 10/4/2014 and let me tell you ladies I was pleasantly surprised. As a person who is new to New York I'm wary of trying out new places because i'm very particular about my hair. I went there for a full install with a middle part and the perimeter left out. I was 30 minutes late but was assured it wasn't a problem and went right to the chair. the salon was nice with the gospel music bumping. I'm already liking what I see. Candy then starts to braid my hair up just tight enough to have them be secure but without feeling like the hair is going to pop off my head because the braids are so tight. We had a great convo about tv and she put me at ease. Right after, the owner starts sewing me up and she was done before i knew it. The work was efficient and quick and my weave was FLAWLESS. no bumps or lumps and perfectly placed (I'm not easily pleased with how my hair turns out). Someone else straightened my hair for me and continuously complimented me on my hair. I will definitely come back for my next install. This will be my go to place while I'm in New York. I also saw that they do other hair services as well (i.e. washes, relaxers etc.).
Very nice, clean and quaint salon! I had a good time here with the stylists. My stylists really took their time with my hair. Always checking if I was okay and if I was comfortable. I was really stressed before I went in there and honestly i felt much better when I left. I love the fact that I can literally walk home and I have been looking for something close to home for a while. When I got home there was a tiny issue with my hair, but I stopped back in at about 915 in the morning and they fixed it right up! Sandy is a very nice woman, I didn't catch the other stylists name but they all are very sweet and kind! I believe their prices are very good! They are not dirt cheap but I felt very comfortable paying how much I paid. The prices are very fair! Give them a try I believe compared to all the salons in the area this has to be one of the best.
My daughter discovered Safari Beauty Salon when my old braiding stylist left me high and dry without someone to do my hair. I called and asked if I could get some Senegalese Twist done as a walk in. When I arrived, I walked into this beautiful salon and some of the best customer service that I have ever experienced in a salon. It normally takes 6 or more hours to braid my hair but my stylist Alethea banged it out in no time. This lady has skills. Every twist is absolutely perfect. She even went to the Beauty supply store with me to pick out my hair before we started. They even offered me a cool refreshing drink on one of the hottest days in New York. **Note to other Salons** TAKE CUSTOMER SERVICE LESSONS FROM SANDY AND THE SAFARI BEAUTY SALON CREW. Job well done ladies.
First time at this salon and I must say Sandy and her staff wonderful. As a recent victim of accident I wanted to get my hair done to bring me back to life. So I expressed my needs and concerns for how I wanted my hair and Sandy excuted it to perfection. Got a full head weave with a side part and it was done beautifully. Sandy and her staff always ask if I was comfortable or if the braiding was too tight which was a plus. Great conversation full of laughs and I walked out of there feeling like a superstar! Thx ladies, I will be back.
I've only been two times and would give it 3 1/2 stars. First time, loved my hair. Great cut, great styling done by Lala and the owner. Second time was basic wash, blow dry, and flat iron. Pretty basic...but I was able to do the same thing myself. Same exact thing. The reason I came to this salon is to recreate what was done the first time. It definitely wasn't worth the money. I will be going back but only if the owner or Lala is available. Other than that, I'll just stay home and do it myself. The women are very nice though.
I went to Safari last week for the first time and I am glad I did. I got my hair permed, dyed and styled. The salon is very clean and the staff is friendly and professional. Sandy and Lala were pleasant and knowledgeable about hair treatments and products. I would recommend this salon to young and mature ladies who want good service at a fair price.
I went to safari yesterday and had flat twists done by Pam. I had been looking for a hair salon for a long time and was sold by the good reviews. The reviews definitely proved to be true. I called a week prior and spoke with Sandy the owner telling her what I wanted done. Sandy said she would have the braider call me back to give me more details and to set the appt. Pam, the braider called me back within the hour and gave me very good information. I arrived to my appt on time and Pam was waiting for me. She started right away and the results were beautiful. This is my new favorite salon. It was clean, comfortable and the music was soothing. The woman were all friendly and I felt right at home. Thank you Sandy and Pam and the entire staff for making my first visit enjoyable. I will be back for sure.
A month ago I called at the last minute looking for an early Saturday appointment for a sew in. I was taking a chance and happy I did. The stylist was doing my hair and another one of her clients and it took a little more than three hours which shows great time management. However I came with my hair already washed. Either way I left the salon smiling.
Cute little hidden gem of a salon, tucked away in the most unlikely place. Despite showing up 30 minutes early for my appointment, I was seen right away. La-la patiently worked her way through 7 months of new growth, for which I applaud her. (I, personally, would have run screaming from my head) The relaxer turned out very nice, she even trimmed my ends! The owner, Sandy, was present for the entire process, giving tips and pointers. I am very particular about who touches my hair, and despite it being my first time, I was totally at ease in the hands of these fine, professional ladies. I saw some neat nail designs and other ladies leaving with some fabulous do's. I know I'll be back, and I highly recommend checking the place out the next time you need hair, nail, and/or make up services.
I just visited this salon for the first time yesturday and had a great experience. NY has so many salons but this one by far surpassed my expectations Everyone in the salon is so nice and sincere. I was greeted as soon as I came in. The salon is so pretty, clean and inviting which is a major plus. Shakira worked on my hair and took her time to make sure it was perfect. She did a great consultation. My relaxer was done to perfection and my hairstyle was so pretty. I got compliments as soon as I left the salon. I can definitely say that I will be coming back here to get not only my hair but my nails and makeup as well.
I have gone to sandy 3 times, first was for a full sewin then if went back for washes and to have the hair tightened and redone. I had never done this before and had no idea where to even begin, she was so helpful and even came to the beauty supply store with me to make sure I picked out the right hair. I have extremely thin silky hair and she spent time going over my options with me. The end result was amazeing and I am now addicted to having a weave! Not only is she skilled at what she does (considering I have been told by other people that a weave was not possible with my type of hair) but her and her staff are all so friendly and didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. I would highly recommend anyone to go se sandy!
I found this salon on yelp and saw the good reviews for it. The pictures won me over and I went in person to meet the stylist and inquire about the prices. Since the prices was very reasonable, I decided to give Sandy a try. I went here on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 to get my hair done for my birthday. The salon was very clean and the atmosphere of the salon was very friendly. I socialized with other clients that were there getting their hair done along with both of the stylist that were there at the moment. I loved my end results. I would definitely go back and I recommend anyone to go to this salon and have Sandy work her magic on your hair.
I went to this hair salon about a week ago to get my hair in a blondish brown bob cut at an angle going toward my face. It was the first time I have went to this hair salon. All I can say is this hair salon is definitely THE BEST HAIR SALON I HAVE EVER WENT TO HANDS DOWN!!!!!! It was very very clean. Hair stylist SANDY was extremely extremely friendly and professional. Her, her fellow hair stylist, and myself laughed and talked as if I been going there for years. IT WAS INCREDIBLE... I never knew a 100% BLACK OWNED ESTABLISHMENT could be this way. When I left there I felt so refreshed and happy with the excellent job done on my hair. Hair was cut exactly how I wanted she gave me exactly what I requested and it is BEAUTIFUL :-) SUPER SUPER PLEASED WITH MY HAIR and I definitely will not be going any where else.... So thank you so much sandy and fellow stylist you gave me a great experience and I hope ppl reading will give you a try. Brownish bob cut at an angle. Styled by Sandy lead stylist at Safari hair salon. Brownish bob cut at an angle. Styled by Sandy lead stylist at Safari hair salon.
It is hard to find a decent hair shop where you can build a great relationship with your stylist unless you have already been going there for years. But I think that this place might change by mind in that respect. The ladies here are friendly. Quick. Great communication, clean shop. I sent my daughter here with my husband along with a picture and everything came out fine. She even went with my husband to pick out the hair she needed. Which is an excellent thing because I didnt know that we had to buy the hair from someplace else (duh to me) I thought they had hair there already. And Lord knows that my husband had no clue as to what to get for hair! My daughter was a little bored but didnt have any books, or a phone or anything to occupy her time and one of the ladies gave her a phone to play with. I thought that was soooo nice, especially since she was there alone. Everyone had a smile on their face. No one cut their eyes at me (for some reason someone is always rolling their eyes at me, dont know why) I will be coming back here soon, this time for me.
I never like no one in my hair other from my mother or my aunt but i took a chance with this salon because of the good reviews about sandy. i called and asked for her and she was very polite and available to help, i wanted a short hair cut and i showed her a picture of what i want and she asked questions to make sure she get the vision i wanted. she did a grate job i love it and i will go back very soon. i will and have recommend my friends to her. thank you sandy.
If you're looking for a clean salon with a professional and knowledgeable stylist, look no further. Sandy takes her time to get to know all of her clients and their individual needs. One of the many things I appreciate about her is if she says she's going to be at the salon at a certain time she's actually there because you know some stylists will have you waiting and waiting and waiting to the point that you don't even want to get your hair done anymore. She even follows up with her 1st time clients to ensure they are 100% satisfied with their hair! ( unheard of) Give her a try- glad I did!!!!
Needed a sew in asap. Found her through yelp. Sandy was very accommodating. She met me at her salon early and did not have me waiting as some other stylists have done in the past to get started on my hair. She was VERY professional and knowledgable about hair and styling. She was a pleasure to work with and I couldn't be more happier about the finished product!
I have been coming to Sandy for almost 2 yrs now. She is the best stylist I have ever had! She really takes time to Get to know every individual person and your personal style. Also, my natural hair is the most healthy it has ever been since I was a child. Her prices are fair, her station is always clean and she takes great pride in a job well done. I HIGHLY recommend Sandy!
